Project Description
Silk Mill, Moulsham, Chelmsford
The Conversion of Marconi’s Grade II Listed Wireless Telegraph Factory
The iconic building was the birthplace of radio, but it had become derelict. The outlook was bleak for Guglielmo Marconi’s historical factory as there was no demand for the use of the building as a commercial premises.
Working with a visionary client, the vast historical database and Chelmsford City Councils Conservation Officer we put forward a proposal that converts the building into eight contemporary apartments. The aim was to celebrate the history of the site and reinstate the original sign writing, preserving the building for years to come.
Externally the conversion retained and refurbished the bespoke detailing while internally the space was divided with curved walls to allow the original built volume and vocabulary to be read.
